Florence in Florence

Yes I realise that I am indeed terrible at blogging but heres's another post! (a 2 month late post... hahaha)

Wow, Florence, where do I even begin!
The dome!
There's something about Florence that I just absolutely adore, I can't quite put my finger on what exactly it is that I love, cause truth is I didn't see as much of the art as I would've hoped, because of how broke I was, it was rainy and absolutely freezing yet I can say that speaking right now, on the 5th of March, Florence is without a doubt one of my favourite places I've been to so far. Maybe it was the enchanting little markets selling all sorts of souvenirs and leather goods or whether it was the most enchanting cathedral I have even seen, I don't know.

I only spent two days there and unfortunately was on an insanely tight budget, you'll understand just how tight in my next post,so I didn't get to go inside any of the galleries. I did however get a chance to go into the Duomo di Santa Maria del Fiore, located at Piazza del Duomo. Construction of the duomo began in 1296 and completed in 1436. It is incredibly beautiful both inside and out. It's free entry into the cathedral and I think I must've spent at least a good hour just staring at the beauty within the cathedral. I had so many people that recommended I go up the cupola but because of my money issue I decided not to go up, its definitely on my to do though next time I'm in Florence.
After visiting the duomo I headed to the markets for a bit of a wander and window shop, funnily enough, despite having barely any money I bought a tiny coin purse. Up until then, since I had my wallet pickpocketed in Milan I had been keeping all my money in a sunglasses pouch...
After a wander through the markets I headed to a gelato store for a bit of a chill and gelato. I headed back to the hostel not too long after that as it was absolutely freezing.

More Duomo! Isn't it incredibly beautiful!?
Market, full of well priced leather products! Highly recommended!

Ponte Vecchio

The next day  I headed to the Piazzale Michelangelo and I went via Ponte Vecchio and window shopped along the bridge. There are incredibly beautiful jewellery shops all along the bridge but unfortunately also rather pricey! At Piazzale Michelangelo you can get the most incredible panoramic view of Florence! I unfortunately was in Florence during a horribly yucky and freeeeeeezing weekend but despite the fact that the weather was gloomy and grey but it was still incredibly gorgeous! I would absolutely kill to be there for a sunset and not gonna lie, its the kinda place that I would love to be proposed to!(Yes I am quite the daydreamer...)

I left Florence for Rome first thing the next morning so I didn't spend nearly long enough in Florence but I will definitely be going back for at least a week next time!

Mmmmm.. I'm missing my prosciutto crudo fix!

A weekend in Nice

So a few weeks ago I went to Nice for a weekend (actually not even that) and its definitely NOT long enough but being an au pair meant that I could only go away for a weekend at a time. I left Genoa at 8am and jumped on the train heading towards Ventmiglia. Ventimiglia is the last Italian city before reaching the French borders. I arrived in Ventimiglia a few hours later and there I got off the train and bought a ticket to Nice, I had to however wait 2 hours for the next train to Nice so although the train ride from Ventimiglia to Nice is just over an hour long, I didn't reach Nice til just a little before 3pm. I checked into my hostel, which by the way was very wonderful, more on that at the end, dropped my stuff off and headed into the old town for a crepe and a stroll, it was so lovely there, lots of little shops to go and see.

After a short walk through the old town, I headed back to the hostel, there I met a few very awesome people, headed out to grab a bit of food before heading out to a Wayne's Bar for the night. It was an awesome bar, good vibes, and there was a great band playing that night.

The next morning I headed to the Food and Flower market at Cours Saleya, went for a walk along the Promenade des Anglais, which had fences and seats set up all along the Promenade for the Nice carnival which was occuring the following weekend, headed to the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art but despite my best efforts I didnt quite manage to make it to the Matisse Museum.

Now the craziest thing happened when I was trying to make my way hometo Genoa, I reached the train station at around 3:30 in order to make my way back to Ventimiglia in order to catch my connecting train (which happened to be the last train to Genoa for the night) at 5:50. I was waiting for the train at Nice and was really confused as to why my train wasnt showing which platform it was leaving from, so I went to the ticketing station and asked. Turns out there had been a landslide somewhere between Nice and Ventimiglia, meaning there were no train leaving Nice in that direction or the next few days. I started freaking out a little, but turns out there were replacement buses waiting outside the station to get to Ventimiglia. While on the bus, I was so worried I wouldn't make my connecting train at 5:50! I made the train by 3 minutes and I felt like I was on the amazing race or something hahaha!

All in all it was a very interesting weekend, I didn't do nearly enough of what I had hoped to but saw enough to know that I definitely want to go back. I also really want to check out Monaco which I unfortunately didn't get the chance to do!

Hostel I stayed at:

Cinque Terre

Wow Cinque Terre, where do I even begin? It is so incredibly beautiful. I'm so in love!

For those of you who don't know, Cinque Terre means five lands and as you can probably guess it is made up of five villages... Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarolo and Riomagiore. Cars are not allowed in most areas of the villages and so the best way to travel between the villages is either by train or by foot. There are foot tracks running between the five villages, many of which are along the coast so it would make for a beautiful walk for those who enjoy it. Personally seeing as I only had a day to spend in Cinque Terre, I didn't particularly want to spend the whole day walking between the villages and preferred to explore the villages in more depths so I chose the train option. If you're like me and do choose to go with the train option it is highly recommended that you get a Cinque Terre train card. For only €10 you can use the frequent trains as often as you like for a day as well as use of the local buses, access to the trail as well as entry to a few tiny museums.

My personal favourite out of the five villages was Manarolo. You get the most incredible view there and as it was the last village that I went to I was able to watch the sunset. Definitely one of the highlights of my life. I also really enjoyed Vernazza, I managed to find a gelato store that was opened (I went on a Saturday in the middle of Winter) and just sat on the rocks, watching the waves crash and a few men fishing.

Cinque Terre isn't the kind of place I would want to live in, I love my busy cities, but its definitely a great place to go to just to get away from the busyness and really just to sit down, slow down and really just appreciate and take in the beauty around you.

Til next time

A week in the Italian Alps

Right after New Years, my host family and I went on a ski trip to Vigo di Fassa, a village in the region of Trentino and approximately a 4.5 hour drive from Genova. We spent 6 days there and being the broke traveller that I am I couldn't afford to ski or snowboard so during those 6 days I went up the mountain to watch Emma ski, and pretty much just chill out on the mountain and take in the beauty of it, hard to complain hahaha. I spent two days visiting nearby villages such as Canazei with my host mum, Maria Rosaria, and doing short hikes between villages.

Being the last minute packer that I am, I was packing the day before we left when Emma comes into my room and hands me a stocking as in like a Christmas stocking to put in my luggage, I was confused (bear in mind that this was on New Years day) and with the language barrier between Emma and I, I just thanked Emma and took the stocking but didn't put it into my luggage since I had already overpacked and didn't really want to carry a stocking that I knew I wouldn't have use for. Turns out I needed that stocking. See the thing is that here in Italy a festive day called Epiphany, a Christian festive day that celebrates the revelation of God the Son as a human being in Jesus Christ (yes I did just copy and paste that from wikipedia) and is usually celebrated on January the 6th. According to Italian folktale an old lady called Befana visits all the children of Italy on Epiphany Eve (the night of January the 5th) and puts lollies and presents in the child's sock if they've been good or a lump of coal if they've been bad, similar to the concept of Santa Claus.

Little funny side story, on one of the days that we were heading to Canazei, a village about 12km away from Vigo di Fassa, as we were waiting for the bus at the bus stop, Maria Rosaria gets a call from Michele, my host dad, asking where we were. She tells him we're at the bus stop and he tells her to come get Emma because she was so tired she had fallen asleep on the chairlift going up the slopes. I thought that was the funniest thing I had ever heard, it still gets me!

Woah that's a lot of writing! Anywho I will be blogging again real soon about my trip to the Cinque Terre!
Til then
